Before cochlear implant surgery — what to prepare

Pre-operative preparation includes medical clearance, imaging, vaccinations, fasting instructions and family planning for recovery support.

Typical pre-op checklist: • Medical fitness for anaesthesia (blood tests, ECG if needed). • CT temporal bone imaging. • Pneumococcal vaccination (especially for children, as per centre's protocol). • Fasting per anaesthesia instructions (usually 6–8 hours). • Arrangements for travel and a primary caregiver post-discharge. • Hair management as advised (hair around the surgical site may need to be trimmed). • Signed informed consent.
