BERA / ABR test for hearing loss in children
BERA (Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry) measures the auditory nerve's electrical response to sound. It is the gold standard for diagnosing hearing loss in infants and young children.
BERA is performed while the baby/child is asleep — naturally or under mild sedation. Electrodes on the scalp record nerve responses to click and tone-burst stimuli at different intensities. The audiologist determines a threshold at which the nerve responds.
BERA confirms whether and how much hearing loss is present, and identifies auditory neuropathy. Together with ASSR (which gives more frequency-specific thresholds) it forms the basis for fitting hearing aids and considering cochlear implants.
