Child Cochlear Implant

Best Age for Cochlear Implant in a Child

Earlier is better. Most experts recommend CI before 12–18 months of age for congenital severe-to-profound hearing loss. Implantation before the age of 3 gives the best speech and language outcomes.

The brain's auditory pathways develop most rapidly in the first 2–3 years of life. Children implanted early — ideally before 18 months — typically develop spoken language closer to that of normally-hearing peers. Implantation after the age of 6 is still possible but outcomes may differ depending on prior auditory experience. A full paediatric workup (OAE, BERA/ABR, ASSR, audiology, speech evaluation) is required before recommending CI.
