Mapping & Activation
Bilateral CI mapping — special considerations
Bilateral CI mapping balances loudness and timing between the two ears for true binaural hearing benefit.
When mapping bilateral CIs, audiologists ensure that sounds presented from the centre are perceived as central (loudness balance), and that timing across the two devices is appropriate. Modern processors from all three manufacturers offer linked two-ear features.
Sequentially implanted users may take longer to integrate the second ear if the gap is large; consistent bilateral use accelerates integration.
