Can both ears be implanted? (Bilateral cochlear implant)

Yes — bilateral CI gives better localisation, better hearing in noise and reduced listening effort. It is recommended for many children and selected adults.

Two ears work as a team. Bilateral cochlear implantation provides spatial hearing (knowing which direction sounds come from), improved speech understanding in noisy environments and lower listening fatigue. International paediatric guidelines now recommend bilateral CI for most children with profound bilateral hearing loss. Bilateral implantation may be done simultaneously (both ears in one surgery) or sequentially (one ear at a time). Funding is the main practical barrier in India — some schemes and CSR partners now support bilateral cases.
