Basics

Can adults learn to use a cochlear implant easily?

Yes — but adults need conscious aural rehabilitation. The first 3 months are the steepest part of the learning curve.

Adults bring an existing language base to CI, which is a huge advantage. Most working-age adults are back to functional phone use within 3–6 months and at their plateau by 12 months. The keys are consistent daily wear (10+ hours), aural exercises (audiobooks, captioned shows, then non-captioned, reading aloud) and patience. Adults with very long-standing untreated hearing loss may have a slower learning curve because the auditory cortex has had less recent stimulation. Even so, meaningful benefit is the norm.
