Can elderly people get cochlear implants?
Yes. Senior citizens are increasingly receiving CIs and consistently report better social participation, lower listening fatigue and improved quality of life.
Studies of CI outcomes in adults over 70 show speech-understanding improvements comparable to younger adults, especially in quiet environments. Surgery is well tolerated under standard anaesthesia. The key requirements are medical fitness, realistic expectations and family support during the first months of adaptation.
Elderly users often report the biggest benefit in family conversations, telephone use and television — areas where unaddressed hearing loss commonly leads to social withdrawal and depression.
