Basics
Will a CI affect everyday activities, sports and travel?
After full healing, most CI users return to all everyday activities — including sports, swimming (with waterproof accessories), travel and even diving (with caution).
Modern processors offer water-safe accessories (e.g. Aqua+ for Cochlear, waterproof options for AB and MED-EL). Helmets must accommodate the processor — most sports helmets and motorcycle helmets work fine with minor adjustment.
Air travel: CI devices are TSA/airport-security friendly. Carry your implant card. Airport scanners do not damage implants. For contact sports involving direct impact to the head, discuss with your surgeon.
Medical disclaimer: This information is for awareness and education only. It does not replace consultation with a qualified ENT surgeon, audiologist or medical professional. Cochlear implant eligibility must be determined after clinical evaluation and diagnostic testing.
