Basics
Cochlear implant and MRI safety
Modern cochlear implants are MR Conditional at 1.5T and (for newer devices) 3.0T. Always inform your radiologist and follow the manufacturer's MRI guidance.
Older implants required magnet removal before MRI. New-generation implants such as MED-EL SYNCHRONY 2 (3.0T) and newer Cochlear / Advanced Bionics devices allow MRI without magnet removal under specific conditions.
Every CI patient receives a device identification card. Carry this to MRI scans. The radiologist must follow the manufacturer's instructions for use (IFU). Most outpatient MRIs in India accommodate CI patients without issue.
