Adult Cochlear Implant
Cochlear implant and music — what to expect
Music perception with a CI varies. Many users enjoy music meaningfully again — speech-heavy genres are easiest; pitch-rich classical and instrumental music takes longer.
CI sound processing is optimised for speech. Music — with its complex harmonic structure — is harder to encode. Most users report:
• Lyrics return early.
• Rhythm is preserved well.
• Melody and pitch nuances develop with training and time.
Music-listening practice is now a standard part of aural rehabilitation. Streaming music directly to the processor via Bluetooth and active listening (versus background music) accelerates progress.
