Child Cochlear Implant

Children with additional disabilities and CI

Children with additional disabilities — autism, developmental delay, cerebral palsy, visual impairment — can still benefit from a CI. Goals and expectations are individualised.

Hearing loss combined with another disability requires a coordinated team — audiology, paediatric ENT, paediatric neurology, occupational therapy, special education. CI benefit is often slower and goals broader (alerting to sound, environmental awareness, basic communication) but quality-of-life improvements remain significant for many children. Family counselling is critical to set realistic expectations.
