Treating moderate-to-severe hearing loss with hearing aids and (where needed) CIs is associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline in older adults.
Untreated hearing loss is a recognised modifiable risk factor for dementia in older adults — partly because of reduced auditory input to the brain and partly because of social isolation.
Prospective studies (including the ACHIEVE trial published in 2023) show that hearing intervention in adults with at-risk cognitive profiles slows cognitive decline. CI plays a key role for those whose hearing aids no longer suffice.
