What happens during a cochlear implant evaluation?
A comprehensive CI evaluation covers audiology, imaging, medical fitness, speech-language assessment, and counselling about realistic expectations.
Steps typically include: pure tone audiometry (PTA), speech audiometry, OAE/BERA/ASSR (especially for children), imaging (CT temporal bone, sometimes MRI), medical/anaesthesia fitness, vestibular tests in selected cases, speech-language pathologist assessment, family counselling.
The team — surgeon, audiologist, speech-language pathologist, sometimes psychologist — discusses candidacy, device options, realistic outcomes and rehabilitation requirements. A written informed consent is signed before scheduling surgery.
