Infection risk and prevention with cochlear implant
Infection risk is low. Pneumococcal vaccination, careful wound care and standard ear-care precautions are the main preventive measures.
Pneumococcal vaccine is recommended for all CI candidates (especially children) per WHO and Indian paediatric guidelines, because the implant slightly raises the risk of pneumococcal meningitis. Vaccination ideally completed at least 2 weeks before surgery, or as soon as possible after if missed.
Day-to-day infection precautions include keeping the wound dry while it heals, avoiding swimming in unclean water, and seeking review for any new pain, redness or fluid leak around the implant.
