Cochlear implant outcomes in India — what to expect

Outcome predictors are the same worldwide: early identification, age at implantation, device usage time per day, family engagement, AVT consistency and access to mapping appointments. Indian centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and several smaller cities now have published outcome data showing mainstream-school enrolment rates above 70–80% for early-implanted paediatric cohorts. The biggest gap in India remains late identification — many children are still diagnosed only after age 2. Universal newborn hearing screening, where available, is closing this gap.
