Cochlear Implant Surgery — The Process
CI surgery is typically a 2–4 hour procedure under general anaesthesia. Most patients are discharged within 1–2 days. Activation (switch-on) is done 2–4 weeks after surgery.
Before surgery: comprehensive evaluation, imaging (CT/MRI), medical clearance.
During surgery: A small incision is made behind the ear; the surgeon drills into the mastoid bone, places the electrode array gently into the cochlea, and secures the internal implant.
After surgery: A small dressing for a few days. Most patients have minimal pain and return to normal activity within a week. Switch-on/activation is scheduled 2–4 weeks later, followed by a series of mapping (programming) sessions.
