Duration of cochlear implant surgery
A unilateral cochlear implant surgery typically takes 2–4 hours including anaesthesia. Bilateral surgery (both ears in one session) adds about 1.5–2 hours.
Surgery time varies based on anatomy, electrode array choice and any unusual cochlear features (e.g. ossification, malformation). Most adult unilateral cases are completed within 2 hours of incision-to-close; paediatric cases tend to be similar despite smaller anatomy because the surgeon often takes extra care.
Families usually wait 3–4 hours from theatre entry to recovery-room transfer.
