Hearing aid trial before paediatric CI
A documented hearing aid trial — typically 3–6 months — is a standard prerequisite before paediatric CI decision. The trial confirms that hearing aids are not providing enough access to speech.
Hearing aids are fitted with verification (Real Ear Measurement or paediatric simulator-based) and the child wears them full-time. Progress is tracked through audiology and speech-language assessments. If language and listening do not develop as expected despite adequate aid use, CI candidacy is confirmed.
In very profound cases or with auditory neuropathy, a short aid trial may be sufficient to demonstrate limited benefit before moving to CI.
