How does the brain adapt after a cochlear implant?
The brain's auditory cortex is highly plastic. With consistent daily use of the CI and active listening, the brain rewires within weeks to months to interpret electrical signals as meaningful sound.
Cochlear implant signals are a different pattern than natural sound. The auditory cortex undergoes a learning process called neural plasticity. In children this happens largely unconsciously through daily life and therapy. In adults, conscious aural training (listening to audiobooks, practising in quiet then noise, using captions initially) accelerates adaptation.
Research shows measurable cortical changes within the first few months of CI use. Most adults reach a plateau around 12–18 months post-switch-on, with continued slow gains thereafter.
