How does a cochlear implant feel?
Sound initially feels mechanical, robotic or echo-like to new CI users. Over weeks and months the brain adapts and sound becomes increasingly natural.
At switch-on most adults describe early CI sound as cartoon-like, Donald Duck-like or echoey. This is because the brain has to learn to interpret a new pattern of electrical stimulation. With consistent daily use and aural training, most users report dramatic improvement within 3–6 months. By 12 months, many adults find speech understanding natural in everyday conversations.
Children — especially those implanted young — never experience this 'mechanical' phase consciously; the developing brain incorporates the CI signal as their native auditory input.
