How Does a Cochlear Implant Work?

Microphones in the processor capture sound, convert it to digital signals, which a magnetic headpiece transmits to the implant. The implant stimulates the hearing nerve via an electrode array placed in the cochlea.

Step-by-step: 1. The microphone on the sound processor picks up sound from the environment. 2. The processor converts these sounds into a precise digital signal. 3. The signal is sent to the magnetic headpiece, which passes it across the skin to the internal implant. 4. The implant directs the electrode array (placed inside the cochlea) to stimulate the hearing nerve. 5. The hearing nerve sends impulses to the brain, where they are interpreted as sound.
