Is CI a cure for deafness?
A cochlear implant restores access to sound — it is not a cure for the underlying inner-ear damage, but it allows most users to understand speech and engage in conversations again.
Cochlear implants bypass damaged hair cells and stimulate the hearing nerve directly. Users typically gain the ability to detect speech and many environmental sounds, and most adults achieve high open-set speech understanding within 6–12 months. Music perception, very noisy environments and subtle voice nuances may remain harder than for natural hearing.
For children, the implant + consistent auditory verbal therapy = spoken language development that closely mirrors that of typically hearing children when implanted early.
