Myth: a child will speak immediately after CI
Reality — speech develops gradually after CI, following the typical sequence: sound awareness, listening, comprehension, first words, phrases, conversation — over months and years.
Even hearing children take 12+ months to say their first words. A CI gives the child access to sound; the brain still has to develop language. With consistent device use and quality AVT, most early-implanted children achieve age-appropriate spoken language by school entry.
Progress is monitored every 3–6 months using standardised assessments.
