Myth: CI is brain surgery
Reality — CI surgery operates on the mastoid bone and cochlea (the inner ear). It is not brain surgery.
The surgical field is well-defined ear surgery performed by ENT surgeons. The incision is behind or above the ear; the electrode array is gently inserted into the cochlea. The brain itself is not operated on.
This myth deters many families from CI; correcting it is part of HearClear's standard counselling.
