Newborn hearing screening in India
Newborn hearing screening identifies hearing loss in the first weeks of life. Early identification is the single most important factor in long-term language outcomes.
Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) programmes use otoacoustic emissions (OAE) and/or automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) tests in maternity wards before discharge. Several Indian states have UNHS programmes; coverage is rising but still inconsistent.
The global 1-3-6 standard: hearing screening by 1 month, diagnostic confirmation by 3 months, intervention (hearing aids and/or AVT) by 6 months — sets up the best possible language trajectory. Parents who have any concern about their child's hearing should request a hearing test even if their hospital did not screen at birth.
