OAE test (Otoacoustic Emissions) — what it tells you
OAE measures sound emitted by the cochlea in response to clicks. It is a fast screening test that confirms whether the inner ear is responding to sound — useful but not a complete diagnosis.
OAE is non-invasive and takes a few minutes. A small probe in the ear canal plays clicks; a microphone measures the cochlea's response. 'Pass' means outer hair cells are responding normally; 'Refer' means further testing is needed.
Limitations: OAE does not detect auditory neuropathy (where outer hair cells work but the nerve signal is impaired). For full diagnosis a BERA/ABR is also needed. A 'Pass' OAE in early infancy is reassuring but does not rule out later-onset or progressive hearing loss.
