Child Cochlear Implant

One ear vs both ears in children — what is recommended

International guidelines recommend bilateral cochlear implantation as the standard of care for most children with bilateral severe-to-profound hearing loss.

Two-eared hearing enables localisation (knowing where sound comes from), better understanding in noise (classrooms, playgrounds), and lower listening fatigue. The developing brain integrates two CIs much more easily when implanted close together in time. Funding is the main barrier in India. Some state schemes and CSR programmes are beginning to support bilateral implantation. If only one ear is implanted initially, the second ear should be reassessed for sequential implantation as soon as feasible.
