Child Cochlear Implant
How parents help their child after a CI
Parents are the single most important variable in a child's CI outcome. Daily talk, reading, music, full-day device use and consistent AVT attendance are the foundations.
Practical priorities for parents in the first 12 months after switch-on:
• Keep the processor on whenever the child is awake (target 10+ hours/day).
• Talk constantly — narrate everyday activities, name objects, sing.
• Read aloud daily — even before the child can speak.
• Attend every AVT session and practise exercises at home.
• Track battery life, microphone covers and cable condition.
• Communicate with the audiologist about any sudden change in hearing or behaviour.
