Parent training in AVT — what to expect

AVT is parent-coached. In sessions, the therapist demonstrates techniques and then coaches the parent in real-time so techniques carry over to home.

Sessions typically last 45–60 minutes. The therapist focuses on a small set of listening or language targets, demonstrates strategies (acoustic highlighting, pause-and-wait, expansion), then watches the parent practise and gives immediate feedback. Parents are expected to practise these strategies throughout daily routines. Progress is monitored every 3–6 months through formal language and listening assessments.
