Post-meningitis hearing loss and urgent CI
Bacterial meningitis can cause profound hearing loss and rapid cochlear ossification. Urgent CI evaluation — within weeks of recovery — is essential to preserve surgical access.
After meningitis, the cochlea can fill with fibrous tissue and bone within months. Once this happens, electrode insertion becomes much harder. Any child who survives bacterial meningitis should have an urgent post-recovery hearing test; if profound hearing loss is confirmed, CI evaluation and surgery should be expedited.
