Recovery after cochlear implant surgery
Most patients return to light activity in 3–5 days, return to school/work in 1–2 weeks, and resume all activity (except contact sports) by 3–4 weeks.
Recovery milestones:
• Day 1–3: rest, soft diet, dressing in place.
• Day 5–7: dressing removed, wound check, hair wash usually allowed.
• Week 2: return to school/sedentary work.
• Week 3–4: resume normal physical activity, full hair wash.
• Week 2–4: switch-on of the external processor.
Mild swelling and bruising behind the ear are normal. Persistent pain, fever, redness or fluid leak warrants immediate attention.
