What is residual hearing? Can a CI preserve it?
Many CI candidates still have useful low-frequency hearing. Modern surgical techniques and shorter electrode arrays aim to preserve this residual hearing.
If you have functional low-frequency hearing, your CI team may discuss 'hearing preservation' surgery using soft surgical techniques and an electrode array chosen to minimise insertion trauma. Some centres also use 'hybrid' or electric-acoustic stimulation (EAS) systems that combine a hearing aid with a CI in the same ear.
Hearing preservation is not guaranteed, but with modern techniques a substantial proportion of patients retain useful residual hearing post-surgery.
