Single-sided deafness and cochlear implants
Adults and children with profound hearing loss in one ear and near-normal hearing in the other ear may benefit from a cochlear implant in the deaf ear.
Single-sided deafness (SSD) causes listening fatigue, difficulty hearing in noise and inability to localise sound. Traditional solutions — CROS hearing aids, bone conduction devices — do not restore true binaural hearing.
Cochlear implantation of the deaf ear in selected SSD candidates is approved by FDA and CE and increasingly offered in India. Outcomes vary; the brain must learn to integrate two very different signal types. The candidate's motivation, duration of SSD and absence of cochlear ossification all matter.
