Speech delay and hearing loss in children
Unexplained speech delay is one of the most common reasons children are eventually diagnosed with hearing loss. Any child with delayed speech should have a hearing test as a first step.
Speech development depends on access to sound. A child with bilateral profound hearing loss who is undiagnosed will not develop spoken language. Mild and moderate hearing losses also cause significant delays in articulation, vocabulary and grammar.
If a child is not babbling by 9–10 months, has no clear words by 15 months, or is significantly behind peers in speech, request a hearing assessment urgently. Earlier intervention dramatically changes language outcomes.
