Sudden hearing loss — what to do
Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a medical emergency. See an ENT specialist within 72 hours for the best chance of recovery with steroid therapy.
Sudden SSNHL typically affects one ear and develops over hours to days. The first-line treatment is oral and/or intratympanic steroids, ideally started within 72 hours. Some recovery happens spontaneously; many recover partially or fully with prompt treatment.
If significant hearing loss persists after treatment and a hearing aid does not restore useful hearing, cochlear implantation in the affected ear may be considered — especially for SSD candidates.
