Mapping & Activation
What is Switch-On and Mapping?
Switch-on is the day the external processor is fitted and the implant is activated for the first time. Mapping is the audiologist's process of programming the processor to suit the individual user.
Sounds usually feel mechanical or unusual at first — this is normal. Over weeks and months, the brain gradually learns to interpret CI signals and speech understanding improves. Several mapping sessions are needed in the first year (often 4–6 sessions) to fine-tune the program.
