Basics
What age is best for cochlear implant?
Earlier is better for children — ideally before 18 months. For adults, age alone is not a barrier; many adults aged 70+ benefit significantly.
Children: The brain's auditory pathways develop most rapidly in the first 2–3 years. Children implanted before 12–18 months typically develop spoken language close to that of normally-hearing peers. Most CI centres in India can implant from 9–12 months once a thorough paediatric workup is complete.
Adults: There is no upper age limit. Medical fitness for general anaesthesia is the key consideration. Adults in their 70s and even 80s have benefitted from CI when hearing aids no longer provide enough clarity.
Early identification matters far more than chronological age — a 14-year-old with consistent hearing aid use can still gain meaningfully from CI, though outcomes vary based on prior auditory experience.
