What is a Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is a small electronic medical device that bypasses damaged parts of the inner ear and directly stimulates the hearing nerve, enabling sound perception in severe-to-profound hearing loss.

A cochlear implant (CI) has two parts: an internal implant placed under the skin behind the ear, and an external sound processor worn on or behind the ear. Together they convert sound into electrical signals that the hearing nerve carries to the brain. Unlike a hearing aid (which amplifies sound), a cochlear implant directly stimulates the auditory nerve. CIs are recommended when hearing aids no longer provide enough benefit — typically in severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss.
