What is auditory verbal therapy (AVT)?
AVT is a specialised therapy approach that teaches children to listen and talk using their hearing technology — without sign language as the primary communication mode.
AVT principles include: early identification and intervention, exclusive emphasis on listening, parents as the primary therapist, naturalistic settings, and ongoing monitoring through standardised assessments. Sessions usually involve the child, the parent and a certified AVT therapist (LSLS Cert AVT or equivalent training).
AVT is one of several oral approaches; families may choose AVT, total communication, or sign language based on their values and the child's needs. HearClear supports family-led choices.
