What is cochlear implant switch-on (activation)?
Switch-on is the day the external processor is fitted and activated for the first time. The audiologist programmes initial sound levels and the user begins hearing through the CI.
Switch-on day usually takes 1–2 hours. The audiologist tests each electrode for response, sets comfort and threshold levels, and creates the first 'map' — a programme that tells the processor how loudly to stimulate each electrode.
For children, behavioural responses (smiles, startles, vocalisations) and objective measures guide the first map. For adults, the user's feedback is the primary guide. Families often capture this moment on video.
