When is switch-on / activation done after surgery?
Switch-on (initial activation of the processor) is typically scheduled 2–4 weeks after surgery, once the wound has healed.
Earlier switch-on (around 1–2 weeks) is feasible in some centres if healing is good and there is no swelling — but most centres wait until day 14–28 for comfort and safety. The first session is exciting and emotional for families.
Multiple mapping sessions follow over the first weeks and months. Sound initially feels mechanical; the brain adapts over time as described in dedicated rehab content.
