Who is a Candidate for Cochlear Implant?
CI candidacy is decided after a clinical evaluation. In general, individuals with severe-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss who do not get enough benefit from well-fitted hearing aids may be considered.
Children: Congenital severe/profound bilateral SNHL, post-meningitis hearing loss, syndromic hearing loss, limited benefit from hearing aids despite optimal fitting and use.
Adults: Severe/profound SNHL with limited speech understanding despite hearing aids, sudden hearing loss, single-sided deafness in selected cases.
Final candidacy depends on imaging, audiological tests, medical fitness for surgery, and realistic expectations.
